PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A New York City man who thought he was going to be freed after his acquittal for a murder in Maine is going to remain behind bars for the foreseeable future.

Twenty-four-year-old Timothy Ortiz waived a detention hearing on Monday after being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The charge was lodged last week on the day he was supposed to be set free after being found not guilty in the September 2016 killing of Jonathan Methot in Biddeford.

According to the new complaint, Ortiz was already a convicted felon when he used a .357-caliber revolver to kill Methot.

Ortiz contends the shooting was in self-defense. His attorney said he could revisit the issue of detention at a later date.
