The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the Maine CDC have announced a new wildlife consumption advisory for deer and turkey due to PFAS contamination.
The new advisory area covers 25 square miles in the Fairfield area, which is 80% smaller than the previous one. The reduction comes after the testing of over 100 deer and turkeys.
Officials advise people not to eat deer or turkey harvested in this area, where PFAS levels are high because of the use of sludge as fertilizer in some farm fields.
PFAS are a group of chemicals that can cause harmful health effects in humans and animals.
