A 79-year-old woman was critically injured after getting impaled by the branch of a falling tree while riding in the passenger seat of a car.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office says the tree fell on a vehicle in Sidney on Tuesday, when strong winds knocked down tree limbs and power lines across the state.

A 78-year-old man was driving an SUV down Pond Road around 10 a.m. with a 79-year-old woman in the passenger seat. A large pine tree fell on the moving vehicle and broke through the dashboard.

Both occupants of the vehicle were hospitalized. The woman was initially in critical condition, but according to the Portland Press Herald, she was listed in fair condition on Wednesday. The man who was driving suffered non-life threatening injuries.
