Petition drive prompts developer to nix affordable housing project in Cape Elizabeth


CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (WGAN) A proposed affordable housing project in Cape Elizabeth is off the table after a group of residents gathered enough signatures to force a vote on it.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Szanton Co. of Portland decided to withdraw their proposal for Dunham Court, a $13.5 million four-story building that would have been built near the Cape Elizabeth town hall.

A group that opposed the project submitted over 1,000 signatures, forcing a referendum to challenge zoning changes that were approved by the town council in October to allow the project to get underway.

Despite the announcement from the developer, the referendum will appear before voters, but a date for that hasn’t been set.

The developer said one of the major goals of the project was to provide affordable housing to allow workers to live closer to their jobs.
