Two philanthropic organizations are helping health care workers during the pandemic by paying for childcare.

The Harold Alfond Foundation and the Bill & Joan Alfond Foundation have teamed up to cover MaineGeneral costs of providing child care for its employees during the pandemic, to the tune of $350,000, officials said Wednesday.

MaineGeneral scrambled to find alternative day care after many schools and day care centers closed in mid-March. The foundations will reimburse MaineGeneral’s costs of child care from March 23 through the end of May.

MaineGeneral operates MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta and a number of health centers in central Maine.
