Philanthropists cover child care costs for Maine healthcare workers amid pandemic

Two philanthropic organizations are helping health care workers during the pandemic by paying for childcare.

The Harold Alfond Foundation and the Bill & Joan Alfond Foundation have teamed up to cover MaineGeneral costs of providing child care for its employees during the pandemic, to the tune of $350,000, officials said Wednesday.

MaineGeneral scrambled to find alternative day care after many schools and day care centers closed in mid-March. The foundations will reimburse MaineGeneral’s costs of child care from March 23 through the end of May.

MaineGeneral operates MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta and a number of health centers in central Maine.
