Maine law enforcement are warning of a scam that’s targeting the state’s sex offenders.

Maine’s Department of Public Safety says multiple registered sex offenders received phone calls threatening them with arrest if they did not purchase gift cards. In some cases, the caller identified themselves using the names of local law enforcement personnel.

Police said the scam also popped up back in 2020 targeting sex offenders in New England.

Anyone who receives the call is asked to reach out to law enforcement to file a report.
