Maine sex offenders are being targeted in a phone scam.

The Portland Press Herald reports scammers are calling registered sex offenders and pretending to be Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies.

The scammers demand the sex offenders pay a fine using gift cards to avoid charges.

Police encourage anyone who receives a call like this to hang up and contact law enforcement.
