Pingree Challenger Says He Wants to ‘Fix, Not Fight’

BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) Maine Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is getting another challenger.

Independent State Rep. Marty Grohman, a businessman with a degree in chemical engineering, announced his candidacy on Tuesday in the 1st Congressional District.

The Biddeford resident said voters are frustrated with corrosive partisanship that prevents government from taking on big problems, and he touted his willingness to work with both parties. He said his focus in Washington would be to “fix, not fight.”

Grohman’s candidacy creates a three-way race in the southern, coastal district. Republican Mark Holbrook is also in the race.

Grohman was a Democrat before withdrawing from the party to become an independent last year. He currently represents House District 12 and works as director of sustainability for New Jersey-based GAF Materials Corp, which makes roofing materials.
