Police have arrested a man accused in connection with burglaries in the Casco area.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Austin Swanson-Monge was taken into custody on Sunday following a series of burglaries.

Officers responded to the Casco Bulky Waste/Transfer Station early Sunday morning to find a man in the process of opening a safe. He fled the area on foot.

While searching for him, police received a report of another burglary nearby and found the suspect sleeping inside an unoccupied camp. He’s also accused of stealing a kayak and fleeing across Parker Pond.

Police said Swanson-Monge was taken into custody without incident and later confessed to two unsolved burglaries at Casco Variety and Pears Ice Cream in Casco Village.

He was being held at Cumberland County Jail.
