VERONA ISLAND, Maine (WGAN) State Police say a woman was taken into protective custody after she was seen on a bridge brandishing a loaded shotgun.

Police received calls from motorists on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge on Thursday around 10:30 A.M., reporting that the 54-year-old woman, who police have not identified, had walked across the bridge from the Prospect side and was sitting on the railing on the Verona Island side.

Police arrived to shut down traffic and set up communication with the woman through a PA system. She then placed the gun on the ground and was taken into custody without incident around 11:15 A.M. The bridge was shut down to traffic for about twenty minutes.

The woman, who has not been charged, was taken to the hospital to be looked at.
