Police have identified remains that were found in Penobscot County nearly 11 years ago.

Spokeswoman Shannon Moss said Monday that Maine State Police had identified the remains found by a hunter in Stacyville in November of 2010 as Christopher Roof, a man from Massachusetts.

DNA confirmed the identity, but Roof had no known connections to Maine and his family had never reported him missing because they believed he chose to remain estranged. He was last seen in August of 2010.

Due to the state of the remains, the official cause and manner of death are listed as undetermined at this time.
