One man is in the hospital in serious condition following a three-vehicle crash at an intersection in Auburn.

Auburn police say it happened around 5 p.m. Monday when 78-year-old Ronald Schmidt, who was driving a tractor trailer, took a left turn from Blanchard Road on to Route 4, or Turner Road. He collided with a pick-up truck being driven by 64-year-old Robert Phair Jr., whose brother was in the passenger seat.

The pick-up truck then spun around and collided with a third vehicle being driven by 42-year-old Melissa McEntee. She suffered minor injuries.

Phair Jr. had to be extricated from his vehicle and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he remains in serious condition.

Schmidt was not injured in the crash.

Police say the accident remains under investigation.
