Police in Portland are investigating a series of vandalism incidents at the city’s Evergreen Cemetery.

David Singer with the Portland Police Department said Friday more than 150 monuments and gravesites had been toppled or broken.

Police say witnesses saw teenagers running away from the cemetery last Friday, though they believe the damage was the result of multiple incidents that occurred over the course of several days.

“I’m always disheartened by such flagrant disregard for not only others property, but for the memories of our community’s loved ones,” said Portland Police Chief Frank Clark. “We have bolstered patrols in the cemeteries, and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police department, even anonymously, to help us solve this senseless vandalism.”

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious activity in and around the cemetery grounds.
