RAYMOND, Maine (WGAN)  The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says a man is in the hospital after hurting himself trying to run away from police.

Police say a little after midnight on Thursday, they pulled a car over on Route 302 in Raymond, near the Raymond Fire Department.

Police say they were investigating an impaired driver and found the passenger, 27-year-old Felton Young, was in possession of a stolen cellphone.

Police say the Kissimmee, Florida man was sitting on the ground and appeared to be highly intoxicated.  That’s when police say he got up, ran across the road and into the woods.

Police say Young tripped over a stump while in the woods and hit his head on a rock.

He was taken to Maine Medical Center for head and neck injuries.

Police say it remains under investigation.
