PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Police say a Portland man who ran from the scene of an alleged assault and jumped into a cove has died.

25-year-old Eric Cohen was the subject of a call to police about a woman being assaulted in Portland Sunday afternoon. Officers located Cohen on the Back Cove running path and saw him jump into the water.

A fire department rescue boat pulled him from the water. He was treated on scene and transported to the Maine Medical Center where he died.

The alleged assault victim was determined to be the man’s girlfriend. She was released from the hospital after treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
