SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) Maine police are investigating a historic war marker stolen from a 240-year-old grave.
Scarborough police said Sunday they are still looking into the theft of a brass Society of Colonial Wars cross at the headstone of veteran John Fogg at Black Point Cemetery in Scarborough.
Fogg died Oct. 22, 1778 at age 49.
The Portland Press Herald reports that cemetery trustees learned of the marker’s disappearance during Memorial Day weekend.
Trustee Robert Hall says the marker’s removal left a hole in the ground.
The headstone also marks the burial spot of Fogg’s wife, Hannah, who died in 1790.
