Gunfire in Saco leads to active search for suspects

A shelter-in-place order has been lifted, but a manhunt remains underway following a shooting and car crash in downtown Saco around noon on Friday. The incident unfolded near the intersection of Elm and Temple Streets just before noon, involving a red Dodge Charger and a gray Honda HRV.

According to the Saco Police Department, gunfire erupted between the vehicles, before the Honda reportedly crashed into another car and an Old Orchard Beach school bus. Thankfully, none of the students on the bus were injured. Four individuals from the Honda then fled the scene on foot.

Evidence suggests at least one of the suspects suffered a gunshot wound to the right arm. A firearm was found inside the abandoned Honda, which has been impounded for further investigation. Police released photos from the scene in hopes of identifying the suspects.

“We urge anyone with information to come forward,” Saco Police Chief Jack Clements stated. “These individuals are considered dangerous, and we need the community’s help to apprehend them.”

A large-scale search involving local and regional agencies, tactical units, K9 teams, and even drone operators, is currently underway. The red Dodge Charger was later found outside the city limits and is also being examined.

As a precaution, several nearby schools were placed on lockdown during the search, but have since been released under police supervision.

Anyone with information about the suspects, the shooting, or the vehicle crashes is urged to contact the Saco Police Department at SacoPD@sacomaine.org or by calling 207-284-4535. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online at www.sacomaine.org/departments/police_department/crime_tip_form.php.

The investigation remains ongoing.
