Topsham Police say a 33-year-old man is expected to survive after being shot and tased by officers overnight this morning
Police say they tracked down Joseph Mendez at Merrymeeting Bridge after he called 911 at 1:32 am to thanks police for their service and saying they would be finding him soon.
They say a dispatcher was able to find Mendez’ location on the 911 map and sent officers to the bridge.
Once there, Topsham Police Chief Marc Hagan says officers tried to communicate with Mr. Mendez and directed him to drop his weapon.
Hagan says Mendez did not respond to commands and instead came toward them while brandishing a machete and was shot.
Chief Hagan said Mendez continued to resist and failed to follow commands and was eventually tased before being taken into custody by Brunswick and Topsham Police Departments.
Mendez was wounded and taken for treatment to Mid-Coast Hospital and then transported once again to Maine Medical for further treatment.
Hagan said the officers involved in the shooting, Mathew Powers and Frasier Vachon, have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol while the state Attorney General’s office investigates their use of deadly force.
Chief Hagan said the underlying criminal charges will be investigated by the Topsham Police Department Criminal Division.
