Police on Tuesday said a standoff in Livermore Falls that lasted nearly 14 hours was resolved after deadly force was used.

Police set up roadblocks at the home on Knapp Street early Monday morning following a report of an armed intruder that came in around 5:30 a.m.

Students were dismissed from nearby schools, and a tactical team surrounded the home.

Four people were in the home at the time, and the intruder is accused of holding them hostage using zip ties. Only one was being held as of Monday evening. That hostage was released early Tuesday.

At a press conference Tuesday morning, Maine State Police Lt. Jason Madore said the alleged hostage taker, identified as Donald White, had been killed. Madore said they believed the home was still rigged with explosives, and were working to clear the property.

Police say they believe White is the former boyfriend of the homeowner.

The officer who shot White has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for all police-involved shootings. Madore says the Attorney General’s Office is also investigating White’s manner and cause of death.

No other information has been released.
