Former Republican U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin won’t seek to reclaim the seat he lost in Maine’s first congressional election using ranked voting.

Poliquin wrote in a Facebook post that he needs to care for his parents, ages 91 and 89, and couldn’t do so if he were to represent Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.

Poliquin, who served two terms, collected the most votes in November, but Democrat Jared Golden emerged as victor under ranked-choice voting when a third-place candidate was eliminated and votes were reallocated.

Poliquin lost a legal challenge.

He wrote that he’ll “continue to speak up and battle for what’s right for Maine and America.” His decision to sit out the 2020 race leaves former state Sen. Eric Brakey, of Auburn, as the only candidate in the GOP primary.

Poliquin also talked about his decision not to run with the WGAN Morning News, which you can listen to here.
