PORTLAND (WGME)— East End Beach in Portland is closed because of a nearby water plant malfunction.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the city owned and operated plant malfunctioned Sunday morning, resulting in an unknown amount of waste flowing into the Casco Bay. The malfunction is reported to have been caused by a failed back-up generator following a power outage early Sunday morning.

The department of Environmental Protection has been notified, and the beach will remain closed until water conditions are proven safe.
