PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Portland’s city council voted Monday night to end an emergency order and approve an indoor mask mandate.

The council voted 8-1 to repeal the emergency order, which also spells the end for a hazard pay ordinance that raised minimum wage in the city to $19.50 an hour.

That repeal takes effect in 10 days, while the mask mandate goes into effect Wednesday at midnight.

The mandate carves out several exceptions, such as businesses that require COVID vaccinations, public schools and churches.

The emergency order also required council meetings to be conducted remotely. Going forward, that decision will be made on a meeting-by-meeting basis.
