One-third of the city council seats in Portland will be up for grabs in November, with no incumbents seeking re-election.
On Monday, Spencer Thibodeau said he would not seek re-election to his District 2 seat. That makes him the third sitting councilor to do so, according to the Portland Press Herald. Councilors Belinda Ray and Nick Mavodones recently announced they would also not be seeking re-election.
In an appearance on the WGAN Morning News on Tuesday, Thibodeau didn’t say what his next move would be. He did say that “each year on the council feels like a decade” and that it seems like there’s a “constant need to make every issue a battle,” and it’s only gotten worse over the past year.
Despite that, Thibodeau told the Press Herald he hasn’t ruled out a run for elected office at some point.
The openings on the council could create opportunities for progressives, who have seen some success in recent city elections as they push for an agenda that addresses issues like racial and economic inequality.
