A Portland city councilor who previously ran for mayor is stepping down as he moves on to a new job with the U.S. Department of Energy.

City Councilor Spencer Thibodeau, who represents Council District 2, will be stepping down.

Portland Mayor Kate Snyder and City Manager Jon Jennings issued a statement Monday wishing Thibodeau the best of luck in his new endeavor.

“It’s exciting to see Councilor Thibodeau continuing his career in public service by going to serve us in the federal government,” said Mayor Snyder. “I wish him all the best in D.C., and I’d like to thank him for all that he’s done for his constituents and for the community as a whole. Portland is a better place because of his contributions.”

Thibodeau’s seat will remain vacant until November 2nd when a new councilor is elected. They’ll be sworn in on December 6th.

He had already stated in the past that he would not be seeking re-election after his term is up.

Thibodeau made his bid for mayor in 2019, but was defeated by Kate Snyder, who unseated incumbent Ethan Strimling.
