The Portland City Council is considering changes to the city’s zoning laws that city staff have been working on for years and released in April.
The Press Herald reports the possible zoning changes are aimed at promoting a denser city with more robust public transportation and easy access to services in the coming decades.
The council discussed changes such as eliminating minimum parking requirements for developers in order to encourage the use of other modes of transportation and cut down on the use of city land for parking.
The city council held a workshop on the possible changes Monday night and will hold another meeting on the subject later this month.
The council could vote on the zoning changes as early as early as November 4th.
City staff held public forums throughout the summer on the topic and collected input from the public online.
