Portland officials mull tax relief for seniors after citywide property revaluation

The city of Portland is considering a program to help the city’s seniors who may be struggling to keep up with recent property tax increases.

Some areas of Portland saw property taxes skyrocket following the first property revaluation in the city in 15 years.

On Thursday, spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said the city is proposing a bridge program, which would provide property tax relief for seniors until a statewide tax deferral program goes into effect next year.

The program, which would be income-based, would double the maximum tax credit from $1,200 to $2,400 and allow the option for payment plans.

It was set to be discussed at a committee meeting Thursday night.
