Portland police charge homeless man in random Old Port attack

PORTLAND (WGAN) A homeless man has been charged in a random attack that happened in Portland on Monday.

A 32-year-old woman told police she was knocked to the ground by a man who attacked her while she was walking in the city’s Old Port area along Fore Street by Center Street a little after midnight on Monday. Portland police on Friday said 38-year-old Aaron Royal, who is described as homeless and originally from South Carolina, has been charged with assault, according to media reports.

Royal allegedly ran up to the woman and punched her, knocking her to the ground.

Police say there is still no known motive for the attack.
