PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Police in Portland say they responded to six drug overdoses in a 12-hour period on Wednesday.

The department is warning about the spike in overdoses. None were fatal, but one person who overdosed on over-the-counter medication was taken to the hospital. The other five were revived using Narcan, the medication which can be used to quickly reverse the effects of an overdose.

The department says Narcan can be obtained free-of-charge from the city’s public health division, along with Overdose Recognition & Response training.

The department also says that unused or expired prescription medication can be safely disposed of 24/7 in the Portland Police Department lobby.
