Portland’s director of public health is leaving to take a job at the University of New England.

The Press Herald reports the city council gave Alfredo Vergara high praise for the work he did with the city over two years.

Vergara previously led operations for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Mozambique, where he focused on containing HIV and the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

The public health division is part of the city’s Health and Human Services Department.

It operates the city’s needle exchange, administers immunizations, and works to prevent and treat disease.
