The Portland Water District says there are no lead mains or service lines in its system.

According to CBS 13 news, the announcement Wednesday follows a federal mandate requiring public water systems to find and replace lead service lines within 10 years.

In 1926, Maine banned the use of lead in pipes that bring water to your home, giving it a head start in coming into compliance.

A 2023 report from the EPA found that Maine still has an estimated 18,000 lead service lines in use. They make up about 0.2 percent of the total lines across the state.
