PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Portland city councilors are holding a public meeting Monday evening to discuss the recent unexpected influx of asylum seekers into the city.

The Community Support Fund is being used to provide benefits to the more than 200 asylum seekers who are currently living out of the Portland Expo building. According to our info partners at CBS 13 News, the city council will consider establishing eligibility rules for the support fund.

City Manager Jon Jennings has proposed July 1st as the date after which new applications will no longer be accepted. But Mayor Ethan Strimling and City Councilor Pious Ali have pushed for the fund to accept all applications.

That meeting was scheduled for 5:30 Monday night.
