Proposal for Maine to use national popular vote instead of Electoral College passes in state Senate

The Maine Senate gave their approval Wednesday for a bill that would change the way the state allocates its electoral votes in presidential elections.

According to CBS 13 News, the measure, which was already approved in the House, would allocate Maine’s 4 electoral votes based on the winner of the national popular vote.

If it passes, Maine will join a multi-state compact consisting of 16 states plus Washington D.C. that have already pledged to do the same.

Maine’s bill faces further votes in both chambers before it goes to the governor’s desk.
