AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Maine could borrow $20 million to boost public school security.

A group of legislative leaders are set to decide Tuesday whether lawmakers should consider the proposal and other new bills.

Republican Rep. Patrick Corey said he’s working with the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine on the idea.

The $20 million dollar general obligation bond would fund school security enhancements such as facility upgrades and efforts between local and state law enforcement. The bond would also provide matching funds for local schools districts and allow private donations.

Lawmakers in some states have started looking at new steps since a Florida high school shooting this month left 17 people dead.

Corey said he feels a sense of immediacy, but said little can be done without funding.
