PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Prosecutors have requested ambulance records in the case of a man charged with the killing a Maine sheriff’s deputy.

WABI-TV reports 29-year-old John Williams has pleaded not guilty to murder in the killing of 61-year-old Somerset County Cpl. Eugene Cole on April 25 in Norridgewock.

State prosecutors are seeking Delta Ambulance’s reports about Williams’ treatment and evaluation when he was taken into custody. There is video and audio evidence.

Authorities say Williams shot the deputy after he tripped and fell during a confrontation.

Williams’ lawyers say their client was badly beaten during his arrest, to the point where he defecated. They say Williams thought he could get away from the officers if he told state police detectives “anything they wanted to hear.”

A trial is set for next summer.
