Protected Health Information Breach by Hackers

PORTLAND (WGME)–Hackers may have gained access to protected health information after a hack was discovered at Sweetser a mental health facility in Maine.

According to our info partners at CBS 13, officials discovered the hack of two employee email accounts, which may have allowed access to protected health information of current and former clients. The company hired digital forensic experts to determine the scope of the data breach, and have sent letters to all 22,000 people who may be impacted. The breach was limited to information transmitted via email, but they say that could include clients names, addresses, dates of birth, social security numbers, insurance information and more.

The company is offering complimentary identity protection services to clients who social security numbers may be at risk.
