BREWER, Maine (AP) Five protesters arrested during a sit-in at U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office in Bangor have agreed to pay $500 to a nonprofit to have their charges dropped.
The protesters will donate to Food AND Medicine, a Brewer-based organization that organizes low-income people to lobby lawmakers. The Bangor Daily News reports in exchange for the donation, the protesters will not be prosecuted.
The protesters on Monday reiterated their objections to the Republican senator’s support for the Senate’s tax package. All of them said the legislation would hurt the poor in Maine and benefit the nation’s wealthiest people.
Jack McKay, director of Food AND Medicine, called the $500 donation significant.
