DANFORTH, Maine (AP)   A federal agency wants the public to weigh in on a paper mill’s plan to abandon its dam straddling the U.S.-Canada border.

The Bangor Daily News reports the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is holding its meeting Aug. 28 in Danforth.

Woodland Pulp has been fighting a 2015 federal license. Officials call the license’s environmental and recreational requirements far too costly.

FERC has been unwilling to let the mill walk away from the St. Croix dam.

Environmental groups and lakefront property owners on East Grand Lake say leaving the dam unattended could spur flooding that would disrupt the environment and tourism.

The company has pushed for a law to allow the state to take over the dam, but federal regulators said the dam would need licensing even if Maine owns it.
