The winner in a Maine State Senate primary was declared Thursday after ranked choice was used.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows say Michael Perkins of Oakland won the three-way Republican primary for State Senate District 16.

The district covers Waterville, Oakland, Winslow, Albion and Fairfield.

Ranked choice voting comes into play when no candidates get more than 50% of the vote.

After ranked choice tabulations were conducted in Augusta on Thursday, Perkins finished with 922 votes, a little over 52 percent of the vote.

Kevin Kitchin finished with 38.30 percent of the vote, and Mark Andre had 17.5 percent.
