A bill to expand ranked choice voting in Maine to include gubernatorial and state legislative races has been sent to the governor.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Maine Senate on Wednesday sent the bill to the desk of Gov. Janet Mills, who has not weighed in on the proposal.

Maine is already using ranked choice voting in federal races.

The expansion could face a court challenge, with the Maine Supreme Court issuing an advisory opinion in 2017 stating that using ranked choice for state offices would violate the state constitution.
