AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Supporters and opponents of a proposed “red-flag” gun control bill showed up in Augusta on Tuesday to make their voices heard. The bill, sponsored by Representative Mark Dion, would give authorities the power to take guns away from individuals who pose a potential risk, based on unstable past behavior.

Dion tells Channel 8 that this bill gives “the police and family members a real tool to intervene in someone’s life who they know is coming apart.”

But opponents, like Andee Reardon, say the law is susceptible to abuse. Reardon says she’s worried that the bill would make it easier for abusers to take away their victim’s firearms.

The full legislature will still need to take a look at the bill.
