Rep Golden Criticizes Shutdown of Consumer Bureau

Maine 2nd District Democratic Representative Jared Golden is voicing opposition to the shutdown of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

The Bureau has been a target of Elon Musk and his DOGE team focused on cutting government spending, and its operations were closed down over the weekend with staffers told to stay at home and refrain from working.

Golden posted on X, saying, “CFPB puts up real guardrails to protect Americans from abusive business practices. They put money back in people’s pockets. If there are problems, let’s fix them. But gutting or eliminating CFPB would be bad for working-class families.”

Golden has not directly criticized President Trump, who won the 2nd District in November’s election but has openly attacked Musk, who is working closely with the President.

Golden linked to a Musk post on X which read “CFPB RIP.”

The agency has long faced pushback from the banking industry and some Republicans, including Trump himself.

Acting CFPB director Russell Vought posted on X Sunday, saying “the CFPB has been “a woke & weaponized agency against disfavored industries and individuals for a long time. This must end.”

The bureau was created after the collapse of the U.S. banking system in 2008 to ensure financial products and services available to American consumers are fair and transparent.

Some Republicans and banks opposed its creation, but CFPB was included in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which was passed by Congress and signed by Democratic President Obama in 2010.

The CFPB website had been disabled Monday night.
