PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A consultant hired by Maine’s largest city to review a police response to Black Lives Matter protests last year has found that local law enforcement acted appropriately.

Portland hired consultants CliftonLarsonAllen to audit the police response to protests that drew hundreds of people to the city in June 2020. The consultants released their report Thursday. They found that police did an adequate job responding to the protests, but organization could have been improved.

The consultants interviewed protesters and reviewed police camera footage and police reports and documents to do their work, Maine Public reported. The report found that police orders to disperse the crowd were “lawful and appropriate.”

City Manager Jon Jennings said the report “confirms the men and women of our police department performed their responsibilities under great duress in a professional and admirable way.” The Portland Police Department has implemented a new crowd management policy and new training requirements since the protests.

The protests took place in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.
