Two bills have been introduced in the Maine Legislature that would increase the salaries of the governor and state legislators, which are among the lowest in the country.

According to CBS 13 News, one bill would raise the governor’s salary from $70,000 to $125,000 per year, starting in January 2027.

The other bill would raise the legislators’ salary from $10,900 in the first year and $7,900 in the second year of each term to $25,000 and $20,000, respectively.

The bills aim to attract more qualified and diverse candidates for public office.
