A Scarborough man who received a life-saving liver transplant is taking part in the Falmouth, Massachusetts Road Race virtually next month.

Rick Griffin received his transplant in 2017 through New England Donor Services after being suddenly diagnosed with acute liver failure and forced into hospice care.

Representatives from New England Donor Services say Rick now dedicates his time to sharing his story to educate people about the importance of organ donation.

Griffin established a 7-mile route along Higgin’s Beach in Scarborough and has been taking part in the Massachusetts race virtually in Scarborough for six years.

“Team Rick,” made up of his close family and friends, fundraises each year leading up to the race. Last year, his team raised over $15,000, which they’re trying to reach again.

The Falmouth New England Road Race takes place on the third Sunday in August, and is itself a fundraiser for another cause that supports children who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling.

Representatives of New England Donor Services, also known as NEDS, say Griffin is just one of many inspiring individuals running with Team NEDS this year.

The team includes several runners who are honoring loved ones, each with their own powerful connection to organ and tissue donation.
