Police are investigating an early morning disturbance in Minot that resulted in the shooting of a deputy and a fire at a residence.

Police said deputies responded to a disturbance call around 4 a.m. Wednesday to find the home on Woodman Hill Road engulfed in flames. Maine State Police say a male standing at the end of the driveway shot a deputy in the leg. The Androscoggin sergeant, 43-year-old Randy Williams, was transported to a hospital for surgery and is expected to survive.

Several vehicles were also shot at. The homeowners were not injured.

Police identified the gunman as 42-year-old Corey Hamel of Minot, who was staying at the residence. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated attempted murder and arson.

Hamel was also a prohibited person on probation for three separate counts of violation of conditional release. He’ll be arraigned on Friday.
