A Boston-based shoe manufacturer with factories in Maine will begin producing personal protective equipment.

New Balance says it will begin manufacturing face masks.

Maine public health officials have said they’ve received shipments of supplies from the national stockpile, but it’s far short of what they need to protect health care workers and help slow the spread of coronavirus.

New Balance has a factory in Norridgewock and a factory store in Skowhegan.

The Portland Press Herald reports that a representative for the company on Monday was unable to provide a start date for the production of the masks.
