Portland police investigate shooting that left 26-year-old man dead

Portland police are investigating a fatal shooting on Sherman Street on Tuesday night.

The department says officers responded to a report of shots fired near the intersection of Sherman Street and Mellen Street around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The victim, a 26-year-old man from Portland, was taken to Maine Medical Center where he later died. The man’s name has not been released.

An autopsy was expected to take place on Wednesday.

Police do not believe there’s any danger to the public.
