Man arrested in Maine shooting deaths to appear in court

MACHIAS, Maine (AP) A man charged with murder in the wake of three fatal shootings in Down East Maine is scheduled to make a first appearance in court.

Police arrested 63-year-old Thomas Bonfanti of Northfield in Machias on Monday in connection with the deaths of three people from Machias and Jonesport. He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Wednesday morning.

Police say they’ve recovered a weapon they believe was used in the crimes, and they believe Bonfanti knew the victims.

Court officials and police said they did not know if Bonfanti had yet hired an attorney.
