PORTLAND, Maine (AP)   A Maine city is bringing a new feature to some of its most visible public spaces: public pianos.

Portland’s “Pianos in the Squares” effort begins on Friday at 11 a.m. with an unveiling of pianos in four public squares. The painted pianos will be available for the public to play through July, whether they want to do their best Dvorak (DEE’-vorj-ak) impersonation or just play around.

City spokeswoman Jessica Grondin says the piano project is a collaboration between the city, Portland Downtown and Friends of Congress Square Park, and it’s supported by local businesses and arts organizations.

The pianos will be located in Monument Square, Congress Square, Longfellow Square and Bramhall Square, which are all areas of heavy foot traffic.
